Playing for Success

This project is a partnership between the Department for Children, Schools and Families, Hertfordshire County Council and Hitchin Town Community Football Club. 'Playing for Success' which provides out of school study support for Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils (9-14 years).

The children take part in a wide range of activities linked to sport and healthy living which improve literacy, numeracy and the motivation to learn independently.

The LearnlT@Hitchin Town FC Study Support Centre opened its doors to the first PfS students in May 2007 with the launch of an eight week pilot programme. The response from the young learners, their parents and teachers was overwhelmingly positive.

The full PfS programme will run from January 2008 for a total of eight schools, four primary and four secondary, with up to 15 students per cohort. The innovative learning programme will include a sport element with a healthy living emphasis linked to citizenship and PSHE. We will continue to work closely with our sister centre, Watford Learning, to ensure the delivery of high quality learning opportunities within Hertfordshire.

One such opportunity was the development of 'Moving Onside', a summer holiday course aimed to support looked-after children as they progressed from primary to secondary school. In addition, following on from the success of the PfS pilot, we were also able to offer a series of 'Summer Fun' days.

The study centre, with its team of dedicated staff, intends to grow from strength to strength during the forthcoming year and we look forward to the exciting prospects ahead.
